“Tell me more about your mom,” Portia said, snuggling closer. “It had to be incredible, seeing her again. Even I was crying, and I don't know her, except for the little bits you've told me here and there.”

“What do you want to know?” I asked, thinking this was a good topic. Several things were running through my mind after our visit together.

“Well, she used to be a witch. If Damien performed a demon kiss on her, that should mean you've also assimilated her powers, doesn't it? What was her magic?”

I was actually floored by this realization. “You're right. I never even considered it.” I gave her a squeeze. “You have such a sharp mind. I don't know what you're doing hanging out with a dummy like me.”

Portia gestured toward the door. “I'm imprisoned with you. I can't help it.”

I laughed hard. “Ouch! That stings.”

Her tinkling giggle joined mine. “I'm just kidding, but it is nice to hear you laugh.”

“Thank you for making me feel a little better.” I kissed her head.

“Any time. Now tell me about your mom.”

I sighed, letting my memories settle over me and realizing for the first time in a long time it didn't hurt to think of her. She was just down the hall. It was as if a massive burden had been lifted off my soul. Despite our current predicament, I felt better than I had in years.

“Ironically, Mom was an amazing Kitchen Witch.”

“A Kitchen Witch?” Portia interrupted. “What's that?”

“In the magical community, Kitchen Witchery refers to skills in the kitchen. It can refer to the magic used in cooking or even the magic used in growing herbs and spices. Mom was an amazing cook. I remember telling you about her incredible sugar cookies, well, there was more to the recipe than the standard ingredients. Mom cooked with lots of love, actually stirring up her food with magical spells. In her garden, she grew herbs as well as flowers and other trees and plants. It's like she has a green thumb, but on steroids. She could grow anything she wanted, and she could speed up the gestation of some of those plants with her magic too.”

“That's cool. Except I'm hungry for sugar cookies now.”

I chuckled. “Maybe you'll get to try them someday soon, after we all get out of here. I'm sure losing her magic hasn't made them any different. A lot of kitchen magic comes from the soul. She was also really great at making things like soaps and lotions.”

“So, kind of like Grandma Milly.”

“Exactly. I think the two of them could really get along. So would your mom, since Stacey loves to cook too.”

“I bet you're right. I miss them.”

I didn't miss the hint of sorrow in Portia's tone. “I know. I do too.”

“Your mom was obviously a healer witch,” she said, continuing on before we both got caught up in regret.

“Yes, which is where I get it from. She used her herbs and concoctions to make up healing remedies that she recorded in her Book of Shadows.
